Jamaica Trip – September 24-30

By Bro. Nathan Giordano, Jamaica Link Brother

In late September, Bro. David Giordano, Bro. Bill Hlina, and I traveled to Jamaica to introduce Bro. Bill to the May Pen and Spanish Town ecclesias, as well as the members of the Christadelphian Bible Mission Jamaica (CBMJ). We also attended the CBMJ quarterly planning meeting to help Bro. Bill gain a better understanding of how the mission operates.

We arrived in Montego Bay, picked up our rental car, and spent our first evening settling in, reviewing plans, and joining the online Bible class. That night, Bro. David gave a heartfelt class on “Children of God,” reminding us that our preaching must always be rooted in love and care for others.

On Thursday, we drove to Ocho Rios to visit Sis. Shauna Chin Sang and Sis. Alissa Oakley, picking up Shauna on the way. We did the daily readings together in Turtle River Park, then shared lunch and fellowship. During our visit, we learned that Shauna’s family members—also baptized believers—live in Free Hill. We met her aunt, Sis. Blanche Wallace, who runs a market stand in Ocho Rios, and arranged to visit the family on a future trip. From there, we headed to the Johnsons’ home in Free Town, where we stayed for several nights, sharing readings and conversation each evening.

Friday brought one of the most memorable moments of the trip. We set out to visit Gloria Simpson, a long-time contact from Kellits who had written to Christadelphian publications over the years. With no phone, email, or exact address—just a P.O. Box and a few local directions—we prayed for guidance and set off in faith. To our amazement, after asking a few people along the road, we found Gloria walking on the roadside near Cowley! She was just as surprised to see us as we were to find her. We visited her home, met her daughter Nikki, and shared a Bible reading together. Sis. Loraine offered to help Gloria get a phone so she could stay in touch, and we hope she will soon be able to visit the May Pen ecclesia. It was a powerful reminder of how God answers prayer and brings His people together.

On Saturday, we attended the CBMJ meeting in May Pen, giving Bro. Bill a chance to meet delegates from across the island and observe how the mission functions. The next day, we joined the Memorial Service in Spanish Town, where Bro. Bill exhorted on “Being Prepared,” encouraging everyone to speak openly about the hope of God’s Kingdom. We later shared lunch with Bro. Keith Kinlocke, CBMJ chairman, and had a productive discussion about the ongoing work in Jamaica.

On Monday, we visited Bro. Melvin Gordon and Sis. Kharma Johnson in May Pen. Bro. Melvin, who with his late wife, Sis. Gerzel, helped establish the May Pen ecclesia, continues to persevere through chronic back pain. It was uplifting to spend time with him and Sis. Kharma, sharing encouragement and fellowship.

The highlight of the week was undoubtedly our meeting with Gloria Simpson—a joyful reminder of God’s guiding hand and the bonds of faith that connect us across time and distance. After years of isolation, Gloria’s reconnection with fellow believers was deeply moving for all of us. We plan to ensure she continues receiving Christadelphian magazines to help her stay encouraged and connected.
